Is There Room for Jesus?

It’s Christmas time a most special occasion to celebrate! This is the time that most of us take note of the baby Jesus that was born in Bethlehem. For many that is all you know. Mary had a baby named Jesus that was born in a stable because there were no more rooms available at an inn in Bethlehem. The reason there were no rooms available was due to the census that was decreed by Augustus the Roman emperor so Joseph had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

I can imagine that there were a lot of people traveling to Bethlehem besides Joseph and Mary. By foot it was a day’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Can you imagine how extremely uncomfortable it was for Mary to be riding on a donkey while nine months pregnant? I would guess that would be a big NO for most of us women who have been pregnant. Mary is going into labor and Joseph desperately needs a place where he can shelter Mary to deliver this very special child.

Since Joseph can find no room for her he was offered a stable nearby to put Mary. I imagine she is recalling what the angel spoke to her about the miraculous conception and that she was the chosen virgin to bring forth the Savior and now she is going to birth him in a dirty stable! Nevertheless, God had a plan. The Savior of the world would arrive in humility and majesty at the same time. Shepherds heard angels declaring the good news and wise men would begin a two-year journey to honor this Child!

Before I became a Christian in 1970 the only understanding I had of Jesus was the baby in the manger. My mother would have a small manger scene out every Christmas and a Bible opened to Luke 2. I knew nothing more than that. I would say that many people today still only see the baby, the star of Bethlehem, and wise men bringing their gifts.

Yes, Jesus came as a child but that child would one day be the sacrificial lamb for the sins of all of us. His sole purpose was to give His life in exchange for ours. He lived as a man who had a God ordained destiny to die so that we could have life. He is no longer in a manger but seated at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. He is King of King and Lord or Lords!

Today He appeals to men and women everyday to consider Him. Most people in America hear about Jesus in some form or fashion. They may go to a church service, have a friend who is a Christian or like it is right now they hear about Jesus almost all the time because it is Christmas. Christmas music is playing in the stores, Christmas movies on television and church Christmas functions celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Perhaps you are a Christian but you have allowed the things of life to discourage you or you have just pushed Jesus out of the picture for now. Maybe there is no room for Jesus? What a great time to open your heart to Him. He was born so you could have a Savior, He lived declaring He was the Messiah and He died willingly to rescue all of us from death. Won’t you make room for Jesus!

“In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:8-11 NASB
