Every time I hear the song Imagine by John Lennon and particularly the part where he sings imagine there’s no heaven I find myself saying…..”No, I cannot imagine!” The reason that it is so hard to imagine that there is no heaven is because I know that because I am a Christian it is my final destination. It gives me great hope to know that when I die I am not going to leave this world and live in a state of nothingness for eternity.
I am not a very creative person. I may be able to use both sides of my brain but I did not get the creative gene. Even though I find it hard to imagine my future without the promise of heaven I find it difficult to truly imagine what heaven will truly look like. It is beyond what this girl can do.
However, the Apostle John, the one who Jesus loved, was chosen to get a download in movie form of what the throne room would look like. It had to be a jaw-dropping experience at the least. He would see The One sitting on the throne, the elders sitting on their thrones and the four living beings. Revelation 4:3-8 gives us a glimpse of what he saw. “The one sitting on the throne was as brilliant as gemstones-like jasper and carnelian. And the glow of an emerald circled his throne like a rainbow. Twenty-four thrones surrounded him, and twenty-four elders sat on them. They were all clothed in white and had gold crowns on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning and the rumble of thunder. And in front of the throne were seven torches with burning flames. This is the sevenfold Spirit of God. In front of the throne was a shiny sea of glass, sparkling like crystal. In the center and around the throne were four living beings, each covered with eyes, front and back. The first of these living beings was like a lion; the second was like an ox; the third had a human face; and the fourth was like an eagle in flight. Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty-the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.”
Wow, does that not just blow your mind? Here John was only given a glimpse of the throne room. This is the real most Holy Place. The brilliance and the waves of sound from all the elders and four living being worshiping loudly must be intense. I CAN’T IMAGINE! There is no way that you could stand up. You would be doing face time on that sea of glass for sure and it would not be on an iphone!
We have enough creative movies in our world today that can take us into a world of fantasy but none could really capture what John saw. But even the glimpse he was given is surely pale in comparison to what is in our future. So I can say both that I can’t imagine that there is no heaven because I’m longing for it in my spirit and I can also say I cannot truly imagine what heaven will look like.
One day life as you and I know it will be over but life will continue in a new way. A life with everything new. Forever in the new heaven, living in peace forever among all the saints and family who have gone before. We will enjoy the presence of the Holy One for all eternity as we constantly hear the voices in worship saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, the One who was, who is, and who is to come!” Oh what a glorious day!
